With spring approaching fast, it is time to get ready for Holy Redeemer’s Annual Dessert Theatre. And with that, tickets are now on sale.
“Our Drama Department loves organizing the Dessert Theatre,” says Drama Teacher Peter Taylor. “Each year, our school community is always amazed by the theatrical talents of our students. Not to mention, the students in the Drama Program really bond during their respective shows and make some lifelong friendships and connections.”
As per tradition, HRH is set to perform three plays over the two-day Dessert Theatre on April 12th and 13th. There will be two senior high plays, both directed by grade 12 students. The first is entitled The Door, directed by Cassie S. It tells the story of a grandmother (Christina B) who sits in her darkened apartment and who refuses to answer the insistent knocking at her front door. She has shut out everything except the one person still capable of reaching her, her teenage grandson, Justin (Landon M).
“I love this play,” says Cassie S, who has been acting at HRH since grade 7. “It is powerful, topical and needs to be seen. I could not be more proud of my cast and crew for the work that they are putting in.” The Door performs only on April 12th.
The second high school play is a comedy entitled Oprah Made Me Do It, directed by Delaney K. In this play, two women (Haley P and Aisha B) at a bookstore compete for the last copy of Oprah Winfrey’s latest bestseller. Caught in the middle is the lowly cashier (Dylan) who desperately tries to please both women.
“We are having a blast in rehearsals,” says Delaney K. “We have created so many jokes and we can’t stop laughing. I really hope the audience loves it as much as we do.” Oprah Made Me Do It performs on April 13th.
The junior high production is entitled That’s Not How I Remember It. In this story, two parents tell the story to their child of how they met, however their stories don’t seem to match.
“We feel that our audience will connect to this play very well,” says Taylor. “The students are having so much fun putting this ridiculous story together, and we hope the audience has a great time laughing at everything we created.” The major players in the cast are Keirsten T, Evan C, Nolan T and Delaney S. That’s Not How I Remember It performs on both nights.
Not only will the Dessert Theatre feature three excellent plays, it will also have some delicious desserts. Tickets for the Dessert Theatre are $10 each and are available at the school. Desserts are $2 at the door.
After the Dessert Theatre, all three plays will compete in the Zone Drama Festival. Last year, one of HRH’s senior high plays won Best Production and represented the Zone at provincials. Needless to say, the students are looking forward to going back.
As the 46 grade 7 to 12 students who are taking part in the shows continue to rehearse, you can bet they are looking forward to seeing two fantastic audiences in April.
