It’s been a long time since Holy Redeemer rolled out the red carpet for their annual Awards Ceremony, but on November 17th, the whole school gathered together to celebrate many achievements of students from the 2021-2022 school year.

The school gathered in the afternoon where students were recognized for their work in three different categories: academics, fine arts and academics.

In the first category of athletics, numerous awards were given to students playing on all of the different sports teams. The big award in this category is Athlete of the Year, which is awarded to the athlete who excels in a variety of sports and combines outstanding athletic skill and ability with sportsmanship and leadership. The recipients for junior high were Kaila Rangen and Lexuz Morana, and the recipients for senior high were Alyssa Vankosky and Pacen Bowman.

“These young athletes showed tremendous athleticism throughout the year in a variety of sports,” says Athletic Director Julie Rothwell. “Some of them played on up to 4 or 5 different teams throughout the year and were strong leaders within each sport.”

Fine arts was the next category where students were awarded for their efforts in a variety of artistic avenues such as art and drama. The Drama Awards, which are awarded to students who excel at drama and/or theatre through performance and leadership, and exhibit a positive attitude were awarded to (junior high) Camryn Leslie and Nolan Taylor, and (senior high) Cassie Pilon and Cody Van Beek.

“I’m always excited to present these awards,” says Drama Teacher Peter Taylor. “This is a strong way to continue to encourage and foster an enrichment of theatre within our students. Based on the work of these four individuals, I am very confident in the future of our program.”

One special award that is relatively new is the O’DaviDesign Scholarship, which is named after an HRH graduate, Jairus Davi-Digui, who passed away after he lost his battle with depression and suicidal ideation. This is awarded to the student who is highly dedicated to and enriched by art and shares that love of art with others. The recipient was Avry Funk.

“This award means so much to me,” says Art Teacher Sandy Fedorak. “Jairus filled our Art Program with love, joy and happiness. To see his legacy live on within our program is so important.”

The final category was academics. Two students from grades 7 to 11 who held top grades in their core subjects were awarded the academic honours awards. The recipients were Landon Peace and Keirsten Tait (grade 7), Maya Dalueg and Carter Seiben (grade 8), Anne Bernadette Napoles and Lexuz Morana (grade 9), Allison Giroux and James Calder (grade 10), and Shawn Williams and Ethan Breault (grade 11).

From there, numerous academic and trade scholarships were awarded to graduated students to help offset some of the costs associated with their post-secondary education. One such student who received a number of scholarships was Diana Pedrajas. The scholarships she received were the top marks in Biology 30 ($1000), Chemistry 30 ($500), Social Studies 30-1 ($500), and the Grade 12 Academic Honours ($1000),

“Diiana clearly demonstrated her commitment to her studies and it is wonderful to see that her hard work has paid off,” says Churchill. “We wish her all the best in future studies.” Churchill went onto to

praise all of the award recipients. “Thank you for making Holy Redeemer such a positive place for everyone to learn and grow, and setting an amazing example of what can happen with hard work and dedication.”

Holy Redeemer would also like to thank all of the award sponsors including: the HRH Football Program, HRH, In Your Drawers, the Costall Family, Oil Ladies Golf Executive, the Taylor Family, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Taylor, HRH Drama Department, the Fedorak Family, HRH Art Department, the Davi-Digui Family, Gelmici’s Jewelry, Mrs. Debbie Smith, Mr. & Mrs. Cole Kennedy, HRH Parent Advisory Council, Ranger Oilfield Group, Mr. & Mrs. Ron Christie, Living Waters Separate School Division, Catholic Women’s League, Weyerhaeuser, International Union of Operating Engineers, Edson Forest Products, NLS Enterprises Ltd, Gram’s Consulting, Mr. Ken Smith, Wild Sheep Foundation of Alberta, Canlin Energy, Daylight HydroVac, Henry Family Vision Care, Canadian Natural Resources, Workun Garrick, and Century 21.

O’DaviDesign Art Scholarship ($1000)
Jairus was an outstanding student of Holy Redeemer High School. He excelled in
academics and athletics and was especially respected and beloved in the Art Department.
Jairus was a talented and devoted artist who worked hard at his craft and from the age
of 7 knew he wanted to work as a cartoonist or animator. He was a deep thinker and a
positive influence to his peers who thoroughly enjoyed his wit and talent. Jairus
graduated with exceptional success in Art 30 and went on to become a talented video
game designer and before he died had the chance to work with one of his childhood idols
in the field of comic book illustration. He leaves a lasting legacy in the Holy Redeemer
Art Department.
Jairus died after a long and brave battle with severe depression and persistent suicidal
ideation. He wanted to live. Wanting to live and knowing how are two different things.
And mental illness, just like cancer, is not something we choose. It is not shameful or a
reflection of character. And it is not the fullness of who we are.
Awarded to a student who is highly dedicated to and enriched by art and shares that love
of art with others. Priority will be given to, but will not be limited to, students who wish
to pursue art as a career.
