It has been three long years since the Holy Redeemer Drama Department performed a main stage
play at the Red Brick Arts Centre. And now the wait is over as tickets will be on sale on November 2nd for
this year’s play!
The play, which is Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, will feature over 45
grade 7 to 12 students showcasing their theatrical talents for the Edson community.
“It has been a long time since we performed at the Red Brick,” says Drama Teacher Peter Taylor.
“Many of the cast and crew have never experienced a play there, which is a place that has become a second
home for our Drama Family. Needless to say, we are excited about our return.”
The play will perform five public performances from November 30th to December 3rd. The
showtimes will be 7 pm nightly, along with a special 2 pm matinee on the 3rd. Tickets for the play are $10
each and are available by contacting the school office at 780-723-7437.
Alice Through the Looking Glass is a sequel to Alice in Wonderland, a play that HRH performed
in 2004. “We’ve never done a sequel before,” says Taylor. “That said, the cast and crew wasn't even born
when we performed the original show, so audiences don’t have to worry about the fact they never saw the
original play. Trust me when I say this sequel stands on its own.”
Taylor added that the production is perhaps the strangest, craziest play they have ever done.
“There are so many strange elements to this piece including some of the wildest characters you’ll ever
meet,” he says. “That said, we are going to great lengths to make sure the audience has a lot of fun
watching our actors perform these pretty crazy characters.”
The cast and crew has been working on this production since early September preparing for show
week. With rehearsals heating up, some of the cast are getting pretty accustomed to spending their after
school hours in the Drama Room. One such actor is grade 12 student Cassie Pilon who plays Alice. “I’ve
been in drama for six years and this is my first lead role in my final main stage play,” she says. “This role
has brought me a lot of challenges and I hope the audience will enjoy what we have created.”
The play has already garnered a lot of community support from local businesses through
sponsorship donations. The major sponsors of the play are Bannister GM, Boston Pizza, Buster’s Pizza &
Donair, Jensen’s Lifestyle Clothing, and Shoppers Drug Mart.
With that, tickets are now available to the public and the HRH Drama Department is hoping the
Edson community will come out to support these young thespians with their return to the Red Brick.
