Awards!

For the second year in a row, Holy Redeemer was unable to host an Awards Night Ceremony to celebrate the many achievements of their students, however it did not stop the school from recognizing the amazing work of the young men and women who make HRH the absolute best school.

“We decided to recognize all the students by announcing different awards each morning during our morning announcements,” says Awards Organizer and Science Teacher Andrea Hallett. “It is so important that all of our students are awarded for their hard work and dedication.”

The HRH Awards are handed out to students who excel in a number of different categories including academics, athletics, fine arts and citizenship. This batch of awards, which were handed out over the last month, acknowledge the work done in the 2020-2021 school year.

The first category was academics and would see the top two students who achieved academic excellence in each grade be awarded with a monetary gift. The award winners were: grade 7 – Carter Sieben and Neha Paul; grade 8 – Anne Bernadette and Aeric Jagorin; grade 9 – Alison Giroux and Drake Reichenbacher; grade 10 – Sean Williams and Cassie Pilon; and grade 11 – Haley Squire and Diana Pedrajas.

In the fine arts category, the school celebrated the work of students in drama and art. The drama awards were awarded to Peyton Blue and Dylan Watson (junior high), and Charity White and Cody Van Beek (senior high). The visual arts award recipients were Diana Pedrajas and Kassidy Rangen, while the O’DaviDesign Art Scholarship went to Karsen LaPierre and Destry Roth.

“The O’DaviDesign Art Scholarship is really close to my heart as it is in memory of Jairus Davi-Digui, a former student who was an outstanding artist while struggling with depression,” says Art Teacher Sandy Fedorak. “Sadly, Jairus lost this battle and tragically took his own life. His legacy lives on in our hearts. Both Karsen and Destry represent the beautiful qualities of that Jairus held: commitment, dedication and a love for the arts.”

The next category of citizenship would see Dylan Watson and Shawn Williams receive the Faculty Awards for junior and senior high respectively. These awards are awarded to students who achieve consistently near the top of the class and display a positive attitude in keeping with the school philosophy. In addition, Sadie Whitford received the Indigenous Culture Award that is given to the student who demonstrates an appreciation and connection to Indigenous culture through various artistic efforts or through their connection to the Indigenous community.

In the athletic categories, numerous awards were handed out for various sports including football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, badminton, and egames. Four big awards for Heart and Hustle were given to students who demonstrate a consistent effort and positive attitude across all athletic endeavors. Jriel Ocampo and Joaquin Stelter won for junior high, while Alyssa Vankosky and Shawn Williams won the award for senior high.

Lastly, many of HRH’s graduated students won a number of awards and scholarships. Some of the scholarships were the Curtis Eggimann Memorial Drama Scholarship to Jayna Fedorak, Family Denistry Scholarship to Evleen Jumaga and Jaci Knight, and the Catholic Women’s League Award to Mekha George and Morgan Steffler.

Of course, this event would not be successful without the amazing contributions of the sponsors that included local businesses, non-profit organizations, and dedicated school community members.

O’DaviDesign Art Scholarship ($1000)

Jairus was an outstanding student of Holy Redeemer High School. He excelled in academics and athletics and was especially respected and beloved in the Art Department.

Jairus was a talented and devoted artist who worked hard at his craft and from the age of 7 knew he wanted to work as a cartoonist or animator. He was a deep thinker and a positive influence to his peers who thoroughly enjoyed his wit and talent. Jairus graduated with exceptional success in Art 30 and went on to become a talented video game designer and before he died had the chance to work with one of his childhood idols in the field of comic book illustration. He leaves a lasting legacy in the Holy Redeemer Art Department.

Jairus died after a long and brave battle with severe depression and persistent suicidal ideation. He wanted to live. Wanting to live and knowing how are two different things. And mental illness, just like cancer, is not something we choose. It is not shameful or a reflection of character. And it is not the fullness of who we are.

Awarded to a student who is highly dedicated to and enriched by art and shares that love of art with others. Priority will be given to, but will not be limited to, students who wish to pursue art as a career.
