After missing an entire season in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, it was amazing sight to see when the Rebels Football team took to the field for their home opener on September 16th.
“It felt like a million years had gone by since we last played,” says Head Coach Mike Bachinsky. “But we were determined to get this season going, and the students could not wait to the take the field.”
Prior to the first game of the season, the Rebels hosted an all-day jamboree on September 11th, which was the first of its kind at HRH. Throughout the day, HRH played three miniature games that saw them end up with a solid 2-1 record.
Then Rebels squad squared off against Drayton Valley in the 2021 season opener on the 16th.
It was a hard-fought game that saw the Rebels learn from every play and grow as a team. “One thing many people forget is that a majority of the students have not played a game yet,” says Bachinsky. “It was awesome watching them learn the game firsthand. Everything we learned in practice just flooded back and became so real. Everyone played their hearts out.”
In the end, the Rebels emerged victorious, 38-28.
“It was amazing to get the opportunity to finally play football,” says grade 9 quarterback Hayden Roth. “All the practice and hard really paid off.”
Although the team ended up with a big win, Bachinsky still said there are things the team still needs to work on. “It’s a game that the team will continue to learn and get better at, but I’m confident this team is going to be a solid squad.”
The win marked the first game since their championship win in 2019.
