Awards!

Holy Redeemer loves showcasing the amazing achievements of their students. One such way is when they hand special awards for the outstanding work their students do in athletics, fine arts, citizenship and academics.

Each and every year, Holy Redeemer hosts a special Awards Ceremony. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, HRH was unable to hold an actual Awards Ceremony, so they got creative and announced the recipients during the morning announcements.

“We knew we wanted to recognize the work of our students,” says Principal Betty Churchill. “All of them worked so hard that they need to be acknowledged. Our students have seen so many activities restricted or cancelled, and we didn’t want them to lose out on this too.”

Over the last few weeks, the HRH Administration took the time to announce different recipients on the PA for their work during the 2019-2020 school year.

“We made sure that all of the students that are currently attending HRH this year were recognized,” says Awards Organizer Andrea Hallett who added that recipients would receive either a physical award or a cheque. “Of course, all of the awards would not be possible without the generous contributions of our business community who sponsored each and every award.”

Within the category of Athletics, the different coaches of the teams selected their Most Valuable Players. Then students were selected for Male and Female Athlete of the Year. The two recipients of this prestigious award in junior high were Pacen Bowman and Madison Materi.

The next category announced was Fine Arts. Here, four students were selected as Outstanding Drama Students: Danielle Bittner, Jesse Cesario, Cassie Pilon, and Cody Van Beek. The Visual Arts award was awarded to Laura Van Dyk.

A new award, and one that is very special to the HRH Family is the O’DaviDesign Art Scholarship. This scholarship, worth $1000, is named after HRH Graduate Jairus Davi-Digui, who was a very loved and respected student, and a devoted artist who worked hard at his craft. After high school, Jairus continued to post-secondary to pursue a career in video game development. Sadly, he passed away in 2019 after a long and brave battle with severe depression and persistent suicidal ideation. This award lives on his name as HRH remembers who Jairus was and the positive impact he had on our school community, and it is given to a student who is enriched by the arts and shares this love of art with others. This year, the award recipient was Josh Laurin. Art Teacher Sandy Fedorak commented, “The Art Department is very proud of Josh and the work that he does in our program. We are also grateful to the Davi-Digui family who funds this award. Jairus is so fondly remembered and cherished by everyone at HRH.”

Citizenship is something that HRH emphasizes as that is a key part of fostering a student’s growth in a faith-filled atmosphere. The two recipients of the Faculty Award, given to the students who consistently achieve near the top of their class and display a positive attitude in keeping with the school philosophy, were Josina Kennedy and Cassie Pilon.

In the academics category, the school recognized all junior high students who maintained an overall average of 85% or higher in their four core subjects. In addition, the top two highest academic students in all grades are awarded money for their hard work: (grade 7) Anne Bernadette Napoles and Aeric Jagorin, (grade 8) James Calder and Allison Giroux, (grade 9) April Aclan and Shawn Williams, (grade 10) Diana Pedrajas and Alyssa Vankosky, and (grade 11) Mekha George and Jaci Knight.

Usually the Awards Ceremony also includes awarding scholarships and awards to graduated students as they pursue their post-secondary careers. “We still ensured that all of our grads received their rightful awards and scholarships to assist them in their future endeavours,” says Hallett.

And now the awards have been handed out, the Awards Committee looks to next year in the hopes that our school community can gather together once again to celebrate the amazing students at HRH. If you know of any business that may be interested in sponsoring an award and/or scholarship, please contact the school office.

O’DaviDesign Art Scholarship ($1000)

Jairus was an outstanding student of Holy Redeemer High School. He excelled in academics and athletics and was especially respected and beloved in the Art Department.

Jairus was a talented and devoted artist who worked hard at his craft and from the age of 7 knew he wanted to work as a cartoonist or animator. He was a deep thinker and a positive influence to his peers who thoroughly enjoyed his wit and talent. Jairus graduated with exceptional success in Art 30 and went on to become a talented video game designer and before he died had the chance to work with one of his childhood idols in the field of comic book illustration. He leaves a lasting legacy in the Holy Redeemer Art Department.

Jairus died after a long and brave battle with severe depression and persistent suicidal ideation. He wanted to live. Wanting to live and knowing how are two different things. And mental illness, just like cancer, is not something we choose. It is not shameful or a reflection of character. And it is not the fullness of who we are.

Awarded to a student who is highly dedicated to and enriched by art and shares that love of art with others. Priority will be given to, but will not be limited to, students who wish to pursue art as a career.
