Five years ago, Carolyn Webb walked the halls of Holy Redeemer as a student. Fast forward to today, she now walks the halls as the school’s newest teacher.
“I’m really excited to be teaching at the school I graduated from,” says Webb. “It’s a different feeling for sure, but it’s going very well.”
Webb grew up in the Niton area and joined HRH in 2013 while she was in grade 10. She became a key player in the school’s basketball and volleyball programs before graduating in 2016. From there, she attended the University of Alberta and graduated last year with a major in Human Sciences and a minor in Physical Education.
HRH was not her first teaching stop as she spent time at HRH’s sister school, St. Joseph’s School, in Whitecourt. “I taught there from August to December,” says Webb. “After that contract ended I saw that a posting came up at HRH and I jumped at the chance to join the teaching staff.”
When asked why she wanted to become a teacher, Webb said, “I’ve always enjoyed helping people. Even back in grade school I loved helping others learn and helping them reach their full potential.”
Webb will be seen teaching English Language Arts 10-1 and 20-2, Religion 9, and Senior High Foods, some of which are classes that she remembers taking when she was a student at HRH.
On top of teaching Webb is hoping to help with any extra-curricular activities once COVID protocols allow. “I would really love to start coaching,” says Webb. “And I’d love to help out with intramurals and Student Council. Any opportunity to get to know the students outside of class would be great.”
Now if you’re thinking that the name Webb sounds pretty familiar, then you are correct. Ms. Webb’s sister is HRH’s Assistant Principal, Laura Webb. This, of course, begs the question, does everyone call both of them Ms. Webb or something different? “One of the students already referred to my sister as ‘Old Ms. Webb,” laughed younger sister, Carolyn. In response, Laura jokingly said, “I don’t know how I feel about ‘Old Ms. Webb’, but perhaps one of use could be Ms. and the other one could be Miss?”
While the two Ms. Webb’s disagree on who gets to be called what, the students and teachers will refer to both of them as Ms. Webb and everyone will somehow figure out who they are talking about.
And based on this small story, one can easily see that Ms. Webb is joining the right teaching staff.
