Football is Back!
Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?!?!
Students at Holy Redeemer love hearing these words as another action packed season of high school six-man football is about to begin.
“We are very excited for the new season,” says Head Coach Michael Bachinsky. “This year we have the largest team in our school’s history with 20 young athletes chomping to get out on the field and show us what they can do.”
The Rebels team is coming off a strong pre-season in the spring that allowed a unique experience for all of the athletes to learn the sport of football. The team is a solid mix of veteran players with a record number of rookies who only just learned the sport. With this in mind, Bachinsky loves to see the older students coach the younger guys on the finer points of the game.
“This is my third and final season playing for the Rebels,” says grade 12 student and Team Captain Brian Birkenhagen. “I believe we’re going to have our best season yet.” Birkenhagen also mentioned that he is honoured to represent his teammates as their captain. “I look forward to leading them onto the field this season.”
The Rebels are set to play seven games this season with four of them being played right here in Edson.
“We love seeing the Edson community come out to cheer on our Rebels,” says Bachinsky. “And with the team we have this year I think the community is in for a real treat!”
The home schedule will see the Rebels play their home opener on September 15th against Jasper (kick-off 4:30 pm) and then they play Redwater on September 29th (kick-off 4:30 pm). No doubt there will be some spooky things happening during their next home game on October 13th (Friday the 13th) against Millwoods (kick-off 4:00 pm). The final game of the season will be on October 27th against Buck Lake (kick-off 4:00 pm). The entire community is welcome to attend to cheer on the home team.
The rest of the schedule will see Holy Redeemer travel to Cold Lake on September 8th, Breton on October 5th and Hinton on October 19th.
And with the way this team is shaping up, you can bet there will be some serious play-off action in November. Stay tuned for more details on that.
