March 4 A Cure

The spring season is almost upon us and that means that the annual March 4 A Cure event is back at Holy Redeemer.

“This marks the seventh year of this event at HRH,” says March 4 A Cure Organizer Michael Bachinsky.  “During the past six years our school has raised over $65,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.”

This year’s goal is $10,000, and to reach it the HRH Student Council, along with many other student and staff volunteers, will be organizing numerous events in order to raise funds.

During the first week (February 27th to March 3rd), student volunteers set up a table at lunch to sell tickets for a special auction that includes some great prizes. There is also a Hope Tree where anyone can purchase an ordainment to hang on the tree with a personalized message inside. This fabulous tree will be on display all month long in the foyer.

During the second week (March 6th to 10th), the school will hold its annual Basketball Shooting Competition. “We thought this made sense during this week as a build up to provincials the following week,” says Bachinsky. Students and staff can pay $0.50 a shot and they get one point for every basket. Prizes are handed out at the end of the week for the highest number of points.

From March 13th to 17th, the school will run a Bake Sale at lunch. All items are donated and are sure to be absolutely delicious.

And during the fourth and final week (March 20th to 23rd) there will be two major events. The first event is the major event of the March 4 A Cure campaign: The Live and Silent Auction. It will be between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm on March 22nd in the foyer at HRH and feature dozens fabulous prizes donated by local businesses. “Each year numerous businesses step forward to donate items and we are very appreciative of this,” says Bachinsky. “If a business wants to donate something, they may contact the school and we’ll be happy to help make arrangements to set this up.” The second event is the Hair Massacre. This is where students raise money in order to shave their heads in front of the entire school at lunch on March 23rd.

Needless to say it is going to be a very busy month at Holy Redeemer. If you cannot attend these events, but would still like to donate, you may receive a tax receipt for any donations over $20. All the money raised will go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
