March 4 A Cure is Back!

The snow is melting (slowly) and the temperature is getting warmer (sort of). March is finally here and with that so is Holy Redeemer’s annual event: March 4 A Cure.

This year marks the tenth straight year the students at HRH have organized March 4 A Cure and over the past nine years they have raised over $10,000 to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

“This was something we started when I first came to HRH in 2010,” says March 4 A Cure Organizer Michael Bachinsky.  “Never in a million years did I think we would here ten years later having donated over $95,000 to help fight cancer. That shows just how incredible the students are here at HRH.”

The March 4 A Cure committee, which has been meeting since November, has planned a month-long set of events that will help to raise money.

During the first week (February 24th to February 28th), student volunteers organized the ever-popular Basketball Free-Throw Competition at lunch. Here, students and staff pay fifty cents per basketball shot. At the end of the week, those students and staff with the highest points will win some fabulous prizes.

During the second week (March 2nd to 6th) the students will host a Bake Sale in the foyer at lunch. All of the items will be donated and are fifty cents each. In addition, on March 4th, there will be a hot lunch of Taco in a Bag.

Capping off the end of the second week, Holy Redeemer will be hosting a grade 7 to 12 dance during the evening of March 5th. Tickets for the dance will be $3.

From March 9th to 13th, there will be a number of other different events such as Candy Jar Guesses, a Subway Hot Lunch, and Locker Wars. “Locker Wars is always a fun time,” says Bachinsky. “We stuff two lockers full of prizes and students bid for the items in the locker. Highest bid wins.”

The biggest event of the month happens on the night of March 12th: the Silent Auction. Numerous businesses in the community donate various prices to be auctioned off. This year, the event will take place at the Sacred Heart Parish from 4 pm to 9 pm. If you or your business wishes to donate a prize to the auction, please contact Bachinsky at the school.

The final week of March 16th to 20th will feature even more events including a Carnival on St. Patrick’s Day, a Hot Lunch with chicken wings, and Cake Wars where students bid some very delicious cakes.

Needless to say it is going to be a very busy month at Holy Redeemer. If you cannot attend these events, but would still like to donate, you may do so by contacting the school. Again, all the money raised will go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
