Awards Night

One of the best days of each school year at Holy Redeemer is the annual Awards Ceremony where the school community recognizes both past and present students with awards and scholarships.

The HRH Awards Ceremony, held on October 5th in front of a record number of attendees, celebrated excellence in athletics, fine arts, citizenship and academics during the 2018-2019 school year.

The first category of the night was athletics, where each sports team recognized their most valuable player. After that, awards for Athlete of the Year were handed out to both junior and senior male and females. These coveted awards went to Alyssa Vankosky, Levi Beckman, Alex Beckman, and Neil Korolichuk.

In the Fine Arts Category, the multiple award-winning Drama Program celebrated the work of their students by handing out four awards for Outstanding Drama Student in junior high (male and female) and senior high (male and female). The Drama Awards were presented to Katie Blue, Ethan Toner, Morgan Steffler and Thomas Pennings.

“These four fine young men and women produced excellent work,” says Drama Teacher Peter Taylor. “They took on strong leadership roles in our program and are well respected by their peers.” Taylor added that Blue, Toner, and Pennings all received acting awards at the Zone Drama Festival this past spring, and Steffler is a recent recipient of the Young Artist in the Community Award at Edson’s Arts on Fire Awards. “This goes to show that these students have a promising future in the fine arts.”

In addition to the Drama Program awards, the Art Program also presented the Visual Arts Award to Haley Sanders.

Within the category of Citizenship, graduated student Adrian Ocampo received a huge applause upon receiving the Congeniality Award. “His was just beaming when we called his name,” says Principal Betty Churchill. “His smile lit up the entire gymnasium.”

The fourth and final category of the evening was academics. Here, students were acknowledged for their high academic achievement. In grade 7 to 9, students were recognized for achieving honours (80% average in core subjects). “I had the pleasure of being the Principal for almost all of the recipients in grade 7 while they attended Vanier,” says Churchill. “I was able to see them grow from Kindergarten to today, and it just warms my heart to see them on stage.”

The top academic achievers in grade 7 to 11 were give monetary prizes. The awards winners were: grade 7 Allison Giroux and Drake Reichenbecher; grade 8 April Aclan and Shawn Williams; grade 9 Diana Pedrajas and Haley Squire; grade 10 Danielle Bittner, Mekha George, Jaci Knight and Morgan Steffler; and grade 11 Evan Chung and Ryhker Lamabe.

During the last 15 minutes of the night, graduated students received a host of scholarships and monetary awards that can be used towards post-secondary education.

The most celebrated recipient of the night was Class Valedictorian Noemi Napoles who collected over $5000 in scholarship money through the following scholarships: Repsol Energy Award, Velvet Energy Award, Daniel H. Mitchell Scholarship, Biology 30 Award, Chemistry 30 Award, Social Studies 30-1 Award, and the Grade 12 Highest Academic Honours Scholarship. In addition, Napoles would also be the receive the prestigious Governor General’s Award.

At the end of the hour-long ceremony, the students held their trophies and cheques with enormous smiles on their faces. “All of these awards and scholarships are made possible by the excellent community partnerships we have made with local businesses,” says Churchill. “We thank each and every one of them for their donation and for investing in our students’ future.”
