Rebels Football Sportsmanship

Anyone who knows anything about the Holy Redeemer Rebels Football team knows that they pack a huge punch when they are on the field. But during their last home game, they showed their tremendous caring spirit off the field as well.

“This past season unfortunately saw a number of teams in the league fold,” says Rebels Head Coach Mike Bachinsky.  “This would mean we would have to play teams from farther away.” In addition, there is a rule that says if any team has to travel more than 400 km the two teams would meet in a neutral location between the two communities. “This would essentially mean that HRH would lose a home game.”

Bachinsky then sat down with his team to tell them the news, but the boys came up with a better idea. They recommended that their opponent, Provost, travel to Edson the night before the game, stay overnight at the school, and then the Rebels would cook the away team breakfast at the school. “It was absolutely amazing to see how our team stepped up to help our opponents come out to Edson.”

Provost took up HRH on their offer and travelled the incredible distance to play the game.

With this amazing amount of sportsmanship, the stage was set for a huge tilt that took place on September 29th, which would be the Rebels very first home game on a Saturday.

In the end, it was the home team that came out on top winning by a score of 72-36. Ryhker Lamabe had an outstanding game on both offence and special teams scoring five touchdowns. Quarterback Landon Schutz also played another amazing game throwing for over 200 yards, and Garrett Inscho and Tyler Pratt had very strong games on defense as they stifled Provost’s run game.

“I was very proud of the team as they played extremely well,” says Bachinsky. “They executed plays very effectively.”

Bachinsky also mentioned that this is only the third game of the season. “There is still room for growth,” he says. “But as the team plays each game they seem to get better and better.”

The Rebels now improve to a record of 2-1 on the season. Their next game is scheduled for Friday, October 12th against Vegreville. Kick-off will be 4 pm on the field behind HRH. This will be final home game of the season and everyone is welcome to come on out and cheer on the home team.
